Europe’s Christmas Markets 2026

Advent 2026 · Europe

Europe’s Christmas markets start opening on Friday. Here’s the order to catch them.

Sixteen markets, one calendar, and the timing nobody prints on the poster. From the first cup of punch at Schönbrunn on 6 November to the Prague tree on 28 November.

Quick answer

Europe’s 2026 Christmas market season opens on Friday 6 November at Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace. Budapest, Vienna’s Rathausplatz and Copenhagen’s Tivoli follow on 13 November, Cologne on 16 November, Munich and Tallinn on 20 November. The classics open in the week before the first Sunday of Advent (29 November): Dresden on 25 November, Nuremberg and Strasbourg on 27 November, Prague on 28 November. If you travel after Christmas, Vienna’s Schönbrunn, Prague and Tallinn stay open until 6 January 2027.

There’s one evening every year when it happens. It’s dark by half past four, your breath shows in the air, and somebody pushes a hot mug into your gloved hands. Cloves, orange peel, a little too much sugar. You didn’t plan to feel eight years old again. You do anyway.

That evening is closer than you think. This year the first big market in Europe opens on Friday, weeks before most people expect, and the rest arrive in a slow relay across November. If you’ve ever landed in Strasbourg on 20 November to find the chalets still wrapped in tarpaulin, you already know why the order matters.

So we put every confirmed 2026 date in one place, built a little tool that tells you what’s open on your exact travel dates, and added the small practical things you only learn by getting them wrong.

Why the dates move every year

Most German, Austrian and Alsatian markets don’t follow the calendar. They follow Advent. The first Sunday of Advent is the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, and because Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, Advent Sunday lands on 29 November. Count back from there and you get the big opening weekend: Nuremberg always opens on the Friday before Advent, which this year is 27 November, with the Christkind reading her prologue from the balcony of the Frauenkirche at 17:30.

Vienna and Budapest play by different rules. They open in mid-November and keep going into the new year, which makes them the cities to bet on if your free days fall early or late.

If your trip is between 28 November and 23 December, almost everything is open. Outside that window, the city you pick matters a lot.

The 2026 opening relay, week by week

  1. Friday 6 November
    Vienna · Schönbrunn Palace

The earliest big market in Europe this year, about 90 huts in the palace forecourt. It runs all the way to 6 January 2027, so it’s also the safest pick if you can only travel after Christmas. U4 to Schönbrunn.

  2. Friday 13 November
    Budapest, Vienna Rathausplatz, Copenhagen Tivoli

Budapest opens both big markets the same day: Advent Bazilika on Szent István tér and Vörösmarty Classic Xmas. Advent Bazilika turns 15 this year and has just been named Europe’s most beautiful Christmas market for 2026 by European Best Destinations. The light show on the Basilica facade starts every evening at 17:30.

  3. Saturday 14 November
Edinburgh · East Princes Street Gardens

Runs to 3 January 2027, with one day off on Christmas Day.

  4. Monday 16 November
Cologne · Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom

Right under the cathedral, two minutes from the main station. Note that it closes on Sunday 22 November for Totensonntag, Germany’s day of remembrance. Plan your weekend around it.

  5. Friday 20 November
Munich · Marienplatz, and Tallinn · Town Hall Square

Munich runs to Christmas Eve. Tallinn keeps its medieval square lit until 6 January.

  6. Monday 23 November
    Colmar · six markets

The Alsatian town most people picture when they think “Christmas village”. Open until 29 December.

  7. Wednesday 25 November
    Dresden · Striezelmarkt

One of the oldest Christmas markets anywhere, first recorded in 1434. The name comes from Striezel, the old local word for Stollen, so you know what to eat first.

  8. Thursday 26 November
    Basel

Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, open until 23 December.

  9. Friday 27 November
    Nuremberg, Strasbourg, Eguisheim

The big night. Nuremberg’s market pauses from 17:25 to 18:00 for the Christkind’s prologue, so get to the Hauptmarkt early if you want to see the balcony. Strasbourg opens across the Grande Île the same day. Eguisheim, a village of round streets ten minutes from Colmar, opens too and stays open until 30 December.

  10. Saturday 28 November
Prague · Old Town and Wenceslas Squares

The tree goes up on Old Town Square and the market stays until 6 January 2027. The last of the big ones to open, and one of the last to close.

Five things the posters leave out

Go when the shutters go up, not when the lights come on

Everybody wants the glow, so 17:00 to 20:00 on a Saturday is shoulder-to-shoulder in Nuremberg, Prague and Vienna’s Rathausplatz. A Tuesday at 11:00 is a different market: you can actually talk to the woman painting the glass baubles. Come back after dark for one drink and the photo.

The mug is a deposit, not a present

In most German and Austrian markets your Glühwein price includes a deposit on the mug. Hand it back for the money, or keep it. Each market designs its own, often a new one every year, and a shelf of them is a better souvenir than anything you’ll buy in a chalet.

Strasbourg checks bags

There are security checkpoints at the entrances to the Grande Île during the market. A small bag gets you through quickly. A suitcase on the way from the station does not.

After Christmas, most of Germany packs away

Cologne closes on 23 December, Nuremberg, Munich and Dresden on Christmas Eve. If your trip runs from 27 December into the new year, head for Vienna’s Schönbrunn, Prague, Tallinn, Copenhagen, Edinburgh or Budapest instead. All of them are still open.

The best stall is usually two streets back

Every famous market has a quieter neighbour. Vienna has Spittelberg in the old Biedermeier lanes. Cologne has the harbour market by the Chocolate Museum. Budapest has the Gozsdu Udvar market in the old Jewish Quarter from 4 to 23 December. Same mulled wine, half the elbows.

Your phone, packed for December

A Christmas market is the one place where your phone is guaranteed to let you down. Freezing fingers, thirty thousand people on the same cell tower, and a question you want answered right now: who built this cathedral, and why is there a pickle on that tree? Here’s what’s new in Wingman this season, and why it matters on a cold square.

New

Download, then forget about signal

Save any tour over hotel Wi-Fi and it plays offline. When the square is packed and your 5G gives up, the story keeps going in your ears.

New

A town we haven’t covered yet? Ask for one

Type Eguisheim, Dresden or a village we’ve never written about, and Wingman builds a walking tour for it in real time.

New

Made by us, or made by AI. Always labelled

Tours written by the Wingman team and tours generated by AI are marked separately, so you know exactly what you’re listening to.

New

Info cards on every city page

The practical stuff in one glance before you set off, so you’re not scrolling ten tabs on a cold bench.

Upgraded

A sharper assistant

The in-app assistant runs on a new AI model, so the odd questions you ask mid-walk get better answers.

Free

Free app, free tours, 7 languages

Wingman is free to download and every audio tour is free in seven languages. Bring your parents. They can listen in theirs.

Our favourite way to use it this month: start the Prague or Vienna tour around 15:00 while there’s still daylight on the facades, finish at the market just as the lights come on, and let the last stop be a hot drink. You’ll have the story of the square before you see it lit up, and that makes it hit differently.

Your first mug of the season is on Friday.

Download Wingman for free, save your market city offline, and walk it at your own pace. No group, no umbrella to follow, no schedule but yours.
